NEW DELHI: Old urge Ranjit Kumar, who was appointed as the Solicitor General of India by the NDA government on June 7, 2014, on Friday resigned from office citing “personal reasons”.
Kumar, who held the place of nation’s second law officer for three decades, has represented the Centre from the apex court at critical cases including the pleas against rising and demonetisation pollution.
He’s the second law enforcement officer to quit after Mukul Rohatgi, who’d resigned since the attorney general in June.
A constitutional law specialist, Kumar, has assisted the apex court in deciding the issue whether a state authorities could provide pardon to the death row convicts in cases that are probed and prosecuted by agencies like the CBI. The issue had arisen from the conclusion of the Tamil Nadu authorities to set free the killers of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
While Kumar confirmed to PTI that he had resigned, sources close to him said that it was for “personal reasons”.
The SG has stated that he put in his papers as he was unable to attend to particular health issues of household members.
“The government is fantastic to me, but I tendered my resignation because of personal motives,” he said.
Kumar had succeeded Mohan Parasaran at 2014 after the workplace was assumed by the Modi government. His term as solicitor general was renewed recently.
His resignation letter was obtained by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad’s workplace on Friday.
There was speculation that the Supreme Court collegium was contemplating his name as a judge of the apex court.
Rohatgi needed to the authorities written in June this season that he was not interested in a second term as attorney general. After Rohatgi stopped senior lawyer K K Venugopal was appointed as attorney general.
Before assuming the office of solicitor general, the Gujarat authorities was represented by Ranjit Kumar and assisted the apex court as amicus curiae in cases including the thing.
Kumar additionally represented then Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa at the disproportionate assets case at Bangalore court and had emerged from the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case.
