Saying You Feel Fat Can Actually Cause Weight Gain, New Study Finds

Now that winter has rolled around and the holiday season is in full swing, it feels like every other meal is a feast of some sort. If you’re trying (and failing) at keeping off the winter hibernation weight, you’re not alone.

The problem with “feeling fat,” though, is that it can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. A study conducted by the Florida State University College of Medicine found that believing you are fat can actually result in you becoming fatter.

The study specifically found that teens who thought they were fat had a 40 percent greater risk of becoming obese in adulthood than teens who perceived themselves as “normal weight.”

There are a few explanations for this, aside from just the “self-fulfilling prophecy” notion. People who believe they are fat are more likely to try extreme diets, binging and purging behaviors, and other disordered eating habits.

This study sheds light on some very important issues regarding self-perception and health.

It is hugely important to instill a sense of self-confidence in teens, especially if they are already struggling with insecurities.

We need to remind kids (and ourselves) that while maintaining a healthy diet is important, weight is not always an accurate reflection of health.

We also need to remember that media portrayals of “healthy” weights usually mean “thin,” but healthy looks different on everyone.

Finally, remember that everyone struggles with insecurities just don’t let those insecurities take over your behaviors.
