Navy averts herdsmen, farmers’ Battle

The intervention by officials of the Nigerian Navy prevented a conflict between herdsmen and farmers in Okoti village in Odoekpe Local Government Area of Anambra.

The News Agency of Nigeria learnt that the catastrophe was triggered by the killing of a farmer working on his farm from herdsmen in the early hours of Tuesday.

An eye witness told NAN that the villagers responded by imposing machete cuts prior to the intervention of personnel on three herdsmen.

A naval officer Onitsha, at the Nigerian Navy base, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident.

He advised NAN that the Navy received distress call in the villagers.

He said that 30 personnel were mobilised to the scene of the episode in 3 vehicles to restore order and peace.

“Our men were there for static patrol and deterrent enforcement only, and whatever,” he said.

The officer stated that his men took to the hospital for treatment the three men.

He added that surveillance would be continued by personnel in the area to avoid the situation from degenerating into chaos.

“We shall continue to appeal to the community leaders and settlers for understanding and calm for peaceful co-existence.

“We’re just one Nigeria. We must live with one another in peace. We should be just one,” he said, and urged the villagers to go about their normal companies, saying the situation is in check.
