Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon are teaming up to star in Fahrenheit 451, the HBO Movies adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s sci-fi dystopian novel.
Well, “team up” is a misnomer, since Jordan is playing with the young, disillusioned “fireman” in a dystopian future that adores the government-sanctioned burning of books, while Shannon will be playing his former mentor with whom he clashes.
Deadline reports that HBO is adapting Bradbury’s classic first novel, printed in 1953, together with Jordan and Shannon starring in the lead roles. Ramin Bahrani, that headed Shannon at 99 Homes, will be helming the adaptation and also co-writing the script along with his 99 Homes co-scribe Amir Naderi.
HBO has just put the adaptation to development, but Variety notes that “project is shifting toward a production commitment at HBO.” Should it, Jordan and Guy Montag, the fireman at the core of the narrative will play, while Shannon will play with with his superior Beatty.
Here is the synopsis of all Fahrenheit 451 under:
Set in the 24th century, ” Dec 451 tells the story of the protagonist, Guy Montag. At first, Montag takes pleasure in his livelihood for a fireman, burning the owners’ houses and illegally owned books. However, Montag soon starts to question his lifetime the worth of his profession and, in turn.
The HBO film would not be the first iteration of the narrative — Francois Truffaut in 1966, and it went on to become a cult classic. Since that time, a brand new adaptation was bouncing around Hollywood — the rights were held by Mel Gibson at the same point due to his adaptation, but abandoned the project in 1999. At one point, manager Frank Darabont had been looking to adapt it, together with Tom Hanks in the lead role.
Bradbury wrote the book for a condemnation of the suppression of free thought, and a commentary on media censorship. When HBO’s adaptation moves through, it would be the newest in a new surge in politically-charged dystopian sci-fi fare that have eerie modern-day parallels, following series like The Handmaid’s Tale, The Hunger Games, The Giver, and the tv adaptation of Minority Report.
At a polarizing media environment where the President of the United States throws about accusations of “fake news” at unflattering depictions of him, Fahrenheit 451 seems like a very clear option for another socially aware sci-fi film. Hopefully this project won’t be burned until it gets off the ground.
